Huffington Post writer asserts that soon, all media will be social
Makes me wonder why publications like the New York Times are planning on charging their online readers.

Why All Media Soon Must Be Social
Join me in chanting three basic truths about the new media landscape:
Communities need news and they thrive on it. If you want to grow a community, feed it specialized news.
Communities are the villages, towns and cities of the web.
News needs communities to serve. If you want to grow a news operation, make sure it serves one or more niche communities.
I’ve been saying for awhile (in bars, at lunch and on my company’s blog, postadvertising.com, that so-called “social media” soon will be called just plain “media” and the world will accept that the power to publish or broadcast to large audiences has passed irrevocably from a select few to virtually everyone. As all content–books, magazines, TV, radio–migrates to the web, all media (with news and current affairs content leading the way) will rapidly turn social. (Click for a newly published ebook by my colleagues at Story–a practical guide to engaging in social media.)

RT @HughBriss Huffington Post writer asserts that soon, all media will be social http://amplify.com/u/1gp8 - I’m particularly surprised that the Times is doing this at the same time that NY Times People seems to gaining a lot of attention. That project seems like such an important initiative that, if i were them, i’d want to see how it plays out before putting a pay wall up. Personally, i think this is a mistake…we’ll find out.

However, I will pay for some content. For instance, I pay for Communications Daily which is a DC based publication that focuses on what is happening in communications in DC (primarily the FCC). It is a must-have in the Communications legal / regulatory environment.
I also pay for the Wall Street Journal. Excellent reporting and it is a valuable resource for me. On that note, I’d pay for TechCrunch. They have excellent reporting on everything Tech and cover a lot of real estate.
Overall, I do believe there is a market depending on the publication.

1 month agoChris: I’m not unwilling to pay for certain content but in the case of the New York Times, I think their plan is silly. They plan to implement a metered billing structure, so people who visit the site more than 10 times a month would need to pay. The way I see it, people are moving away from newspapers and getting their news in other ways and although getting it live from non journalists is not the most reliable way to get it, the trend is quite clearly moving in that direction. It’s almost like the news organizations are working in some sort of time bubble that’s a few years behind the rest of us.
1 month agoHugh - with regard to NY Times, agreed… i think your point on the trend is right on the market…
1 month ago“right on the mark.”

Not almost - they in fact ARE living in a bubble. Traditional media has not felt the impact of the social media evolution for one simple reason: they have ALWAYS had the ability to communicate whatever they want whenever they want. The new tools are providing no new benefit to them - at least not in the same way or with the same effect that the new tools provide benefit to the “common” man.
1 month agoMike: IMO, the organizations that change will survive and the ones that persist in doing it the “old fashioned” way will go the way of the dodo.
1 month agoWithout a doubt, Hugh. Without a doubt.
1 month agoNo one will pay when they can get a good site like Amplify to socialize at!

2 weeks agoI agree…isn’t this the best possible situation? To be a part of the news, get instant feedback and stay connected? I don’t think people will be so sad to cancel their daily newspaper subscriptions in lieu of getting the same information online, faster…
